- Abstract
Excessive vegetative growth in cotton leads to delayed maturity and consequent loss of seed cotton yield (SCY) is one among major problems of north-western India. Therefore, an investigation comprising of four defoliation levels [i.e. control, Dropp ultra(thiadiuron 36 % SC + diuron 18 % SC) @ 175 ml/ha, Dropp ultra @ 200 ml/ha and Ethrel(2-chloro ethyl phosphonic acid) @ 1250 ml/ha] in main and five levels of plant growth retardants [i.e. control, mepiquat chloride(N, N-dimethylpiperdinium chloride) @ 1250 ml/ha, mepiquat chloride @ 1500 ml/ha, Stance(cyclanilide 2.1 % + mepiquat chloride 8.4 %) @ 400 ml/ha and Stance @ 600 ml/ha] in sub plots of split plot design was carried out during Kharif 2018 at Faridkot and bathinda so as to identify suitable dose of defoliants as well as plant growth retardants to regulate growth and maximize cotton yield. Among studied defoliant treatments, Dropp ultra @ 175 ml/ha resulted in significantly higher SCY of 2658kg/ha and 2394 kg/ha at Faridkot and bathinda over the respective controls. Among growth retardants, Stance @ 600 ml/ha resulted in maximum reduction in plant height, biomass, monopods per plant and monopodial length but also exerted negative influence on yield attributes as indicated by reduced SCY than other chemical treatments at both the study sites. Mepiquat chloride @ 1250 ml/ha resulted in significantly improved SCY of 2621 and 2361 kg/ha over the control at Faridkot and bathinda, respectively.
