- Title
Vernacular dialectal environment of Multiple Modals in Lowland Scotland: theory and pragmatics of Double and Triple Modals in Hawick.
- Authors
BOUR, ANTHONY R.
- Abstract
This article explores the use of multiple modals in the dialect of Hawick Scots in Lowland Scotland. It discusses the different combinations of modal verbs and their semantic ordering, as well as the influence of regional Scots dialects and grammatical influences. The study finds that there is a growing acceptance of standard English structures with one classical modal auxiliary, but traditional dialectal constructions are still present. The author suggests that further research in other areas of Lowland Scots could provide more insights into modality.
