- Title
Joseph Smith Encounters Calvinism.
- Authors
Millet, Robert L.
- Abstract
The article discusses key theological differences between Arminianism, Calvinism, and the doctrines of Mormon prophet Joseph Smith. The author emphasizes the contributions of Mormonism to theological debates on such subjects as the independent moral agency of man, salvation by God's grace, and the atonement of Jesus Christ. It is suggested that many Mormon believers find the idea of human agency to accept or refuse God's gifts to be more dignified and beautiful than Calvinist doctrines of the omnipotence of God and the irresistiblility of God's grace. Other topics include the elect chosen by God, the Book of Mormon, and doctrinal disputes within Protestantism during the 19th century.
