- Title
Perceptions of Greece-Turkey Disaster Diplomacy: Europeanization and the Underdog Culture.
- Authors
Mavrogenis, Stavros; Kelman, Ilan
- Abstract
The article discusses the impact of disasters on politics and foreign relations through an examination of diplomacy between Greece and Turkey following a series of earthquakes in the two countries in 1999. The author connects the rise of this diplomacy and Greece-Turkey rapprochement to the mid-1990s Europeanization process, and argues that the earthquakes worked to undermine stereotypes Greeks and Turks held about each other. Also provided is a discussion of the history of conflict between the two nations, beginning with the Greek war of independence against the Ottoman Empire, and its impact on Greek and Turkish national identity.
