- Title
The Languages of Bai Ganyo: Codeswitching as Social Commentary.
- Authors
Friedman, Victor A.
- Abstract
The article examines the way in which various languages are used in the Bulgarian novel "Bai Ganyo," by Aleko Konstantinov, as a means to comment on the value systems of Ottoman Europe and non-Ottoman Europe. The author explains the novel's use of the Bulgarian language along with the Ottoman (primarily Turkish), European, and Slavic language groups, and Hungarian. The way in which such language use demonstrates Konstantinov's thought on the relations between Slavic countries is explained.
