- Title
Exile and Ethnic Identity in Norman Manea's Work.
- Authors
Mindra, Mihai
- Abstract
The article discusses the Romanian author Norman Manea and the themes of Jewish identity and exile in his literature. It relates how Manea considered himself a politically persecuted intellectual and artist for being treated as an imposed internal political exile with no specific ethnic identity. Manea's writing reveals the capacity of the Romanian communist ideology and nationalism to deconstruct and re-construct the ethnic and political identity of its opponents. Other topics include symbolic distance between victim and memory, the act of reading, and the book "The Black Envelope."
