- Abstract
The article discusses how officials at the U.S. immigration office in Astoria, Oregon dealt with Chinese merchants between 1900 and 1924. It comments on the impact of U.S. federal immigration policy and particularly exclusionary laws. The author comments on good, bad, and ambiguous official perceptions of Chinese businesses. Chinese firms discussed include the Hop Hing Lung Company, a contracting and importing business, the Yee On Company, founded as the Quong Yin Kee Company, implicated in the smuggling of immigrants, and the Hop Yick Shing Kee Company, a firm that boarded workers and sold Asian food and merchandise.
