- Abstract
The quality and comprehensiveness of cardiac rehabilitation vary greatly. The goal of cardiac rehabilitation is to help patients reach their optimal physical, medical, psychological social, emotional, vocational, and economic status. In the West, a comprehensive, multifactorial lifestyle behavior change program has been developed for the rehabilitation and secondary prevention of patients with ischemic heart disease. Consideration of this model suggests that it is important to introduce the behavioral science approach to cardiac rehabilitation. The present study reports on the application of the behavioral science approach in a cardiac rehabilitation program. This program is composed of 3 factors including psychological stress, nutrition, and exercise aiming at a total life style modification through the application of cognitive behavior therapy. The target behavior of the psychological stress, nutrition, and exercise were prescribed and the results were self-rated by the subject. Language reinforcements and other encouragements were used to support successful target behavior, while unsuccessful behavior was subject to further counselling. As a result, the weight, blood pressure, blood cholesterol, food intake, alcohol consumption, and amount of medication were found to decrease. In addition, Type A behavior, which is a risk factor in ischemic heart disease, was reduced. In conclusion, the efficacy of this program is supported by the results of this study, revealing the importance of the behavioral science approach to cardiac rehabilitation.
