- Abstract
James Madison University (JMU) joined with three Virginia school divisions (one high need, one highly diverse and one rural) and a community-based educational organization (a museum) to improve teacher quality and classroom instruction in science, technology and math content knowledge and pedagogical skills. Supported with Virginia Department of Education Partnership for Realizing Improvement in Science and Math (PRISM) grant funds, three Colleges within the University (Education, Science and math, and Graduate and Outreach Programs) JMU provided content instruction, mentoring, technological resources (Lego robots) and continuous support for teachers, administrators, students, parents and community members both on site (in person) and virtually through the PRISM website: http://www.jmu-prism.net/. Based upon student achievement data and teacher classroom performance data (self-reported through attitudinal and instructional surveys), teachers' classroom use of technology and higher-level problem solving instructional strategies increased, which in turn improved student Standards of Learning (SOL) assessment results.
