- Abstract
In this study, we explored risk behaviors for developing feeding and eating disorders (FED) in students at the University of Manizales and the correlation with the level of interference in academic performance. The sample comprises of 946 students from three academic programs of the University of Manizales. The findings showed that 28.7% of students endorsing risk behaviors for developing an FED, with a higher percent (36.1%) in students from Social Communication and Journalism program. Likewise, we found a significantly high level of interference in academic performance in students with risk behaviors for developing a FED in the medicine and psychology programs compared to those who did not endorse these behaviors. No significant differences were found in Social Communication and Journalism students. We conclude that risk behaviors for presenting a FED are frequent among university students and are associated with a high level of affectation in academic performance, but only in students from some specific programs. Academic programs are needed to develop strategies to mitigate this risk and the possibility of university dropout.
