- Authors

- Abstract
The January 2009 gas crisis resulted from an unresolved commercial dispute between Naftogaz (Ukraine) and Gazprom (Russia). It is not the first time that gas supplies to the EU have been disrupted. Tensions between Russia and Ukraine and Russia and Belarus have been raised several times since the split up of the Soviet Union due to continuing difficulties to agree on the details of a new gas transit and supply regime. This paper is not focused on analyzing the reasons and connections of relations of the post-Soviet area. It is more important that a new gas supply disruption could happen at any time This is because debts of Ukraine for gas for the preceding month are paid off to Russia on the seventh of each month, a month early in fact.
