- Abstract
The NO-DO newsreel, the principal audio-visual means of communication of the Francoist period, documented Picasso's life and work between 1956 and 1981. This article analyses how NO-DO portrayed the most important Spanish artist of the twentieth century during the dictatorship. As a member of the French Communist Party and a prominent figure in exile, eulogising the creator of Guernica presented difficulties in Franco's Spain, since the authorities considered him an ideological enemy. Initially absent from the news, the nationalist agenda of NO-DO promted his image to be resurrected.
