- Abstract
The legal environment within the United States gives employers significant freedom to conduct employee monitoring in many forms. Technological advances have made the electronic monitoring of employees easier and more intrusive. While scholars and employers commonly acknowledge that increases in social capital and organizational commitment are greatly beneficial to overall employee productivity and job satisfaction, the interrelationships among the separate concepts are not well understood. Employee monitoring is one of those aspects and can be viewed as having a relational basis to trust, social capital and overall organizational climate. This paper examines how electronic monitoring may impact social capital and overall integration, or commitment, to an organization.
