- Abstract
Background It is well documented that parastomal hernias (PSH) are a common complication post the formation of a stoma; however, the incidence of PSH development varies widely between studies. This makes it difficult for protocols to be developed to guide stomal therapy practice. There is no uniform definition of best practice and clinicians are guided more often by anecdotal evidence rather than clinical guidelines. This study aims to establish the incidence of PSH at University Hospital Geelong (UHG) and determine at what timeframe postoperatively they are most likely to present. Method This retrospective study examines the rates of PSH in a cohort of patients that had surgical formation of a colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy at UHG between January 2017 and December 2019. Data was collected via the hospital records of these patients. Results A total of 265 patients who underwent ostomy formation were included in the study, with PSH documented in 65 of these patients (24.5%). In the patients with documented PSH, 18 of them (27.7%) were noted within the first 3 months, 21 (32.3%) between 3-6 months, 11 (16.9%) between 6-9 months, and 15 (23.1%) greater than 9 months post-colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy formation.
