- Title
Unter Einsatz aller Sinne: Zum ökonomischen Blick und dem Sammeln von Wissen in der Frühphase der niederländischen Ostindienkompanie (1602 – ca. 1650).
- Authors
Friedrich, Susanne
- Abstract
Focusing on sensually obtained knowledge, the article demonstrates that the Dutch East India Company (VOC) must be considered an autonomous knowledge collector, and that its relationship to learned empiricism was problematic. Despite their shared practices for knowledge acquisition, appreciation of sensory perceptions, and careful documentation, merchants and scientists differed in both their objectives and what they regarded as valuable knowledge. Merchants privileged economically useful information; a preference that directed their attention and influenced their practices.
