- Abstract
The article discusses the first music recordings of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, produced in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1910 by the New York City-based Columbia Phonograph Company. Several individuals involved in the project are examined, including organist John J. McClellan, conductor Evan Stephens, and recording engineer Alexander Hausmann. The author particularly explores the role of Joseph J. Daynes Jr., owner of the music store the Daynes-Beebe Music Company, in facilitating the recording. Public reception to the recordings is also considered.
