- Authors
Allen, Patricia L. Jackson
- Abstract
Poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac are common plants in many regions of the United States and Canada. All parts of the plant, including the root system, contain urushoil and are potentially allergenic. Plants are allergenic all year round, not just when they have leaves. Even dead plants can cause lesions. According to the author, parents and child caretakers should also be told that even though a child has not shown reactivity to these plants in the past. avoidance is recommended because sensitization may have occurred. Moreover, parents, caretakers, and camp or recreational leaders should be encouraged to keep children away from these plants whenever possible and to make a concerted effort to remove the plants from areas used by children.
