- Abstract
The article focuses on the genocide of Armenians by the Ottoman Turks between 1915 and 1923, and the importance of the 1948 Genocide Convention in the pursuit of justice. The author provides a historical background of the persecutions experienced by many Armenians during the Ottoman Turkish Empire, including ethnic discrimination, selective class favoritism and the mass-scale slaughter of Armenians in 1896. The author discusses the development of punishment for the crime of genocide, which was initiated after World War II, called the Peace Treaty of Sèvres, on August 10th, 1920. The implementation of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide by the United Nations General Assembly on December 9th, 1948 implemented effective penalties for such crimes.
