- Abstract
This article explores the significance of ruins and elegies in pre-Islamic poetry as modes of confronting annihilation. At first glance, the site of ruins appears to be a lonely space immersed in decay. Yet the repetition of diction in poetry on ruins that invokes revival reinforces the idea of immortality rather than annihilation. As for elegies, the article examines a specific type of Banu Hudhayl poetry which represents a stylistic deviation from this genre. Their poetry demonstrates that the inevitability of annihilation is confronted by that of resistance, so that the scene of death turns into one of heroic martyrdom.
