- Abstract
The article presents the history of the rise and fall of Vermont City, a community established by settlers from Vermont in the Dakota Territory. Topics discussed include the features of the first houses in the Vermont colony, the challenges faced by settlers which contributed to the failure of the settlement, and a bleak view of farm life on the Great Plains in the late 19th century as described in Willard W. Cochrane's "Development of American Agriculture."
