- Abstract
The article discusses and presents images of paintings from the latter half of the nineteenth century of the notches and mountains of the White Mountains in northern New Hampshire. It examines the painting "Mount Lafayette in Winter," by Thomas Hill, noting that the composition was likely based on photographs taken by photographer Benjamin West Kilburn. Other works discussed include "Presidential Range from Jefferson Highlands," by John Ross Key and "Mounts Madison and Adams," by Horace Wolcott Robbins Jr. Brief timelines outlining the artists' lives are also presented.
