- Title
Outback and Out West: The Settler-Colonial Environmental Imaginary by Tom Lynch (review).
- Authors
Young, Alex Trimble
- Abstract
Tom Lynch's book, "Outback and Out West: The Settler-Colonial Environmental Imaginary," offers a comparative study of settler environmental writing in the Outback of Australia and the American West. Lynch argues that both regions' literary representations of their ecologies are influenced by the settler colonial imaginary, which shapes even seemingly benign forms of settler environmental writing. The book engages with ecocriticism and bioregionalism while challenging some of their assumptions. Lynch's close readings reveal structural similarities and recurring phrases that reinforce settler sovereignty and ownership as natural facts. The book also raises questions about the author's relation to Indigenous culture and critique, highlighting the complexities of decolonial scholarship.
