- Title
Stateless Roma in Macedonia.
- Authors
van Selm, Joanne
- Abstract
The article discusses the difficulties faced by stateless Roma people in Macedonia. Many of the issues revolve around proving eligibility for citizenship, and the absence of relevant documentation. A tradition of mistrust between the Roma and other local ethnic groups has led to problems with discrimination, and variations in local regulations regarding procedures for obtaining official documents are described as burdensome. The efforts of some non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to assist Macedonian Roma in establishing their rights to Macedonian citizenship are described.
