- Abstract
A low-cost and simple modification method is proposed to enhance the durable superhydrophilicity of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hollow fiber membranes with anti-fouling and antibacterial functionalities. The enhancement of hydrophilic properties is attributed to the synergistic effects of the surface's chemical composition and the micro- nano roughness structure. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) were employed as hydrophilic modifiers, while glutaraldehyde (GA) served as a crosslinking agent, to construct an antibacterial and hydrophilic layer on the surface of PTFE hollow fiber membranes. The hydrophilicity and durability are further enhanced by the successful formation of micro/nano structure on the membrane fibers after the instruction of γ-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH560). Notably, the modified hollow fiber membranes demonstrate superhydrophilicity (WCA=0°) and exhibits excellent water flux (8185.38± 178.27 L⋅m-2⋅h-1). After undergoing artificial accelerated cleaning in acid (pH=1), alkali (pH=14), and oxidant (3000 ppm NaClO) solutions for 14 days, the modified membranes still maintain their superhydrophilicity without the loss of water flux. This simple hydrophilic modification strategy endows PTFE hollow fiber membranes with practical application in the field of sewage treatment.
