- Abstract
This article discusses the importance of including non-human animals in environmental justice research. It highlights that environmental justice is not only about disparities in environmental quality and health based on race and class, but also about the relationship between humans and the natural world. The symposium "Justice First: Interdisciplinary Approaches in Environmental Justice Research" brought together speakers who examined environmental justice in relation to urban health, environmental injustices, and education. The symposium emphasized the need for a paradigm shift in ecological research, centering social justice and including youth in research. It also explored topics such as the impact of historical redlining on urban ecosystem health, rodent infestations in Philadelphia neighborhoods, and the influence of urban stressors on wildlife physiology. The symposium called for interdisciplinary scholarship and recognized the importance of lived experiences in shaping research.
