- Authors
Stapleton, Paul J.
- Abstract
The article discusses the literary influence of the 16th-century Latin book "Disputationes De Controversiis Christianae Fidei Adversos Huius Temporis Haereticos," by the Jesuit author Robert Bellarmine, on the image of personified books within John Milton's 1644 work "Areopagitica." Details are given describing how Bellarmine used a similar figure of speech when addressing the issue of censorship. Comments are also given alluding to possible direct influence from Bellarmine to Milton.
