- Title
Domesticated Wilderness in Two Norwegian Children's Classics.
- Authors
Rees, Ellen
- Abstract
A literary criticism of the Norwegian children's books "Sidsel Sidsærk," by Hans Aanrud, and "Bygdebørn hjemme og paa Sæteren," by Marie Hamsun, is presented, with emphasis given to the influence of their conservative values on Norwegian cultural identity. The ways in which the authors utilize a mountain setting to create a metaphorical home for Norwegian children is examined. Aanrud's discussions of Norwegian nationalism are compared to Hamsun's anti-democratic and anti-modernists notions.
