- Abstract
The article investigates the effectiveness of programmed instruction in a teaching machine that teaches organic chemistry without the assistance of a teacher. Lecture demonstrations on chemistry through the use of teaching machine were compared to traditional teaching. Through teaching machine, learning and retention of organic chemistry will be enhanced and student interest on the subject matter will increase. The teaching machine provides students with verbal presentation and verbal interchange. However, independent method of instruction like teaching machine is only advantageous to those students with good reading comprehension.
