- Abstract
Drug resistance plasmids carried by epidemic strains of phage types 204 and 193 from Britain have been characterized by genetic and molecular studies. The role of some of the plasmids in determination of these phage types has been described in more detail. Examination by agarose gel electrophoresis of the plasmids present in the wild-type strains confirmed that types 204 and 193 were related and that the probable progenitor strain was of type 49. Close similarities in the plasmid content of pairs of strains of the same resistance spectrum and phage type from human and bovine sources confirmed the previously reported epidemiological findings.
