- Abstract
Teacher's mental health has been evidenced in the COVID-19 pandemic due to the emotional and psychological pressure exerted by the disease on these professionals. Teaching activities carried out at home can generate stress, anxiety, depression and, consequently, affect their quality of life. This study aims to identify the presence of symptoms of depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation in teachers of a health course at the Federal University of Alagoas – campus A. C. Simões. Study with a quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional, developed in a higher education institution in the city of Maceió-AL, Brazil. The sample consisted of permanent professors from the A. C. Simões campus who work in a health course. Analyzing the score of the CES-D depression scale, it was identified that 65.5% of teachers are at risk of developing depression. The analysis of the STAI score revealed that 89.7% of the professors had state anxiety at a moderate level, and 86.2% had trait anxiety at a moderate level. Conclusion: Mental illness is intrinsically present in the lives of teachers in the COVID-19 pandemic. It is necessary for the higher education institution to think about coping strategies for this mental illness, also offering psychological and emotional support.
