- Abstract
Among the constraints to yam (Dioscorea spp.) in Brazil, the dry rot disease caused by the nematodes Scutellonema bradys and Pratylenchus spp. is the most important on commercial and seed tubers. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of soil incorporation with aerial portions of Crotalaria juncea, C. spectabilis, C. ochroleuca, Tagetes erecta and T. patula on a mixed population of the causal agents of dry rot disease of yam, under greenhouse conditions. After soil amendments, sprouting yam tubers were planted and 30 days later the plants were inoculated with a mixed population of P. coffeae and S. bradys. Pots were set in a completely randomized design with six treatments (including the control) and eight replications. Five months after planting, the nematode populations were assessed. Soil amendment with the aerial portions of Crotalaria and Tagetes species did not reduce nematode populations. The inefficacy of the amendments may be related to factors such as the amount of plant parts used and the composition of nematode populations.
