- Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinical outcome and comparative impact of the utilization of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose-riboflavin and isotonic dextran-riboflavin in accelerated crosslinking on the mean depth of the demarcation line. Material and Method: In a comparative case series, crosslinking was performed in 69 patients (69 eyes) using a riboflavin solution containing either dextran-riboflavin; n=38 or hydroxypropyl methylcellulose-riboflavin; n=31. In addition to a complete ophthalmologic examination, all patients were scanned by Pentacam Scheimpflug camera, and a corneal endothelium cell count was taken using a Topcon specular microscope. Also, the depth of the demarcation line was measured on the central cornea with anterior segment module of spectral domain optical coherence tomography (anterior segment-optical coherence tomography). Results: The mean center depth of the demarcation line was 279.11±49.43 µm in the dextran-riboflavin group and 354.80±22.58 µm in the hydroxypropyl methylcellulose-riboflavin group (p<0.001). Kmax and uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity were improved in both groups after 12 months. Endothelial cell density was stable in both groups. Conclusion: We found deeper structural changes in the hydroxypropyl methylcellulose-riboflavin group than in the dextran-riboflavin group. This may be explained by different riboflavin solution properties and raises safety concerns.
