- Abstract
Considering the technological advancement and the living of a cyberculture, we began to wonder whether the easy access to information, brought by the amplified use of technology, democratized or massified knowledge. It is with this mindset that this article was developed, which, in short, aims to investigate whether technology in post-modernity democratizes or massifies access to information. Through this research, we tried to define the general notions of post-modernity; we also thought about the role of technologies in postmodern society; understood the importance of information/knowledge in postmodern society; reflected on technologies as an instrument of democratization or massification of access to information and, thus, tried to verify whether there is a distinction between democratization and massification regarding information and knowledge construction. To fulfill these objectives, this study was developed using a dialectical method, with a qualitative approach, exploratory objective and bibliographic procedure mainly focused on the studies of Lyotard (2009), Castells (1999), Chauí (2003, 2007) and others. We hope that through this study we demonstrate that there is a distinction between democratization and massification and that, as much as technology allows access to information, it does not democratize it, but rather, it massifies, as it does not allow "quality" access to information.
