- Abstract
An update on the side effects of hormone therapy in the treatment of prostate cancer is presented. Standard treatment is to reduce testosterone to castration levels. The major complications of androgen deprivation include hot flushes, sexual dysfunction, osteoporosis, decreased muscle mass, weight gain, altered lipid levels and anaemia. Intermittent androgen blockade and anti-androgen monotherapy in selected patients may decrease the rate of side effects encountered with androgen suppression. Recommendations to the patients at initiation of androgen deprivation therapy as well as management of side effects are discussed.
