- Abstract
To clarify the variation characteristics of soil seed banks in different elevation gradients, the response of these banks to the vertical band spectrum, and the potential for community restoration in the Jiangjiagou Gulley watershed, Yunnan, 8 elevation zones [Ⅰ(2 700-2 900 m), Ⅱ(2 500-2 700 m), Ⅲ(2 300-2 500 m), Ⅳ(2 100-2 300 m), Ⅴ(1 900-2 100 m), Ⅵ(1 700-1 900 m), Ⅶ(1 500-1 700 m), Ⅷ(1 300-1 500 m))] were selected as research objects. We studied the quantitative characteristics, species composition, species diversity, and similarity of soil seed banks in plant communities. The average species number and seed density in the Ⅲ and Ⅱaltitude zones were found to be significantly higher than those of Ⅶ and Ⅷ. The seed density and number of species in the soil seed banks gradually decrease with decreasing altitude. The Margalef richness indexes (M) of Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ are greater than 5.000,while those of Ⅶ and Ⅷ are less than 3.000. The seed germination species are mainly composed of Compositae and Gramineae.More than 2 300 m are dominated by perennial herbs; below 2 100 m, annual herb and biennial herb plants predominate and the distribution of species in each altitude zone is adequate. The altitude uniformity index is greater than 0.900 except for the altitude zone of Ⅵ. The Simpson dominance index(D) and the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H) in altitude zone Ⅲ are the highest, with values of 0.942 and 3.006, respectively. The D and H of altitude zone Ⅶ are the lowest, with values 0.810 and 1.720, respectively.Except for the Ⅶ and Ⅷ altitude zones, the soil seed banks of the other altitude zones had the highest similarity with the seed bank of the adjacent elevation zone. The Sorensen similarity coefficient is expressed as 0.400≤CS<0.550.The similarity coefficient decreases with the increasing altitude distance. Our results indicate that the change of soil seed banks of the vegetation community in the Jiangjiagou Gulley watershed is affected by the elevation gradient, which is related to the vertical distribution of climate.
