- Abstract
The military intervention of May 27 in 1960 did not only affect the social, political, and economic life in Turkey but also shaped the field of culture and art and caused structural changes in this field. With the continuation of this process until 1980 following the military intervention, the intellectual and practical clarity of the changes in the field of culture and art allowed us to see and evaluate the characteristic features of this period. The 1960s in Turkey were the years when the problems in the field of art were publicly voiced. During that period, recommendations and views on basic issues such as the support and encouragement of the state, the ability of art and artist to make a living with their production, the guarantee of copyrights, the dissemination of art, the opening of Turkish art to the world, and the mobilization of art museums were discussed. Between 1970 and 1980, within a period of 10 years, artists acted with the desire to change the existing system which led to the emergence of the artist generation of the 1970s. Additionally, the art environment started to be independent of the state with art galleries, independent organiza)tions, publication, internationalization processes, efforts to determine the commercial value of art, and collectors, and a foundation for the change of understandings that existed in contem)porary Turkish art until that time was formed through discussions and inquiries that eliminated interdisciplinary distinctions.
