- Abstract
The Turkish novel has been influenced by folk tales, epics and fairy tales since its begining, and this effect has made itself felt more strongly in some writers. Similarly, mythology has been a form of understanding that both influenced and conflicted with the novel. Novel writers, fed by folk tale and epic tradition, usually make natural events an important element of the story. In the literature of Faruk Duman, one of the most important writers of recent years, plants, animals and humans are described as inseparable elements of the Cosmos, often intertwined in a mythical style. In his texts, special attention is observed in the description of nature and animals. In the novel series Sus Barbatus!, an original world has been created by combining the ecological quality of this attention with the holistic perspective of mythology and the hopeful tone of folk tales. While this world is fed by a socialist realist vein, at the same time it clashes with the realist tradition with the differences in narrating style and using of language. With the details and depth of his descriptions, the author positions nature as the main vital element, not as a background or an element outside of people. It allows the reader to think more deeply about the "similarities and differences" while narrating the lives and behaviors of animals and humans in their own worlds. It does not put people in the center in terms of "value". The fact that each element of the living world is approached with special care is an indication of the ecological attitude ingrained in the novels. In this article, the understanding of the world in the first two volumes of the novel series has been examined on the basis of the relationship between nature, animals and humans.
