- Abstract
The study aims to investigate the effect of breeds on growth performance, carcass traits and meat quality of commercial meat goats in Taiwan. Sixteen Nubian or Alpine crossbred wethers were used in the trial; after achieving marketing weight, six goats from each breed with similar body weights were selected and slaughtered; then, longissimus dorsi muscle from wethers were collected to assess meat texture. The result showed that the FCR and ADG of Nubian weathers were significantally higher than Alpine weather in whole period(P < 0.05) ; moreover, Nubian wethers achieved marketing bodyweight earlier than Alpine wethers, which decreased the risk of economic loss. There was no significant difference in dressing percentage, total meat yield and shearing force between two breeds (P < 0.05). The results can be applied as a reference to feeding management and purchasing guide for farmers to obtain higher profits.
