- Abstract
This article focuses on the first edition of the Festival Internacional de Cine Experimental y Documental (FICED), held at the Catholic University of Córdoba in 1964. This festival allows for understanding cinema as a sociocultural phenomenon, because it was an exhibition circuit organized by Catholics that brought together short films worldwide including those produced by the first cohorts of students and graduates of film schools in Argentina. Most importantly, it included the presence of filmmaker Norman McLaren. Our objective is to explore the significance of shorts at that specific juncture. While FICED’s vision associated cinema with education for “development,” the shorts acquired heterogeneous meanings depending on whether they manifested the different positions espoused within Catholicism or those of young or experienced filmmakers. All of those divergent positions converged at the 1964 FICED festival.
