- Abstract
Michele Meek's book, "Consent Culture and Teen Films: Adolescent Sexuality in US Movies," explores the representation of consent in contemporary US teen films. Meek examines how depictions of consent have evolved over time and how they intersect with issues of gender, race/ethnicity, gender identity, and sexuality. The book highlights the limitations of an affirmative consent framework, particularly in regards to teenage boys' consent. Meek also discusses the historical context of moral panics surrounding cinema and youth, and the role of media in creating and normalizing sexual scripts. The book raises important questions about shifting depictions of consent and their implications in other media forms and national contexts.
