- Abstract
The article analyzes two regular cultural events that emerged in the early 2000s in the town of Pomozdino, Ust-Kulom district, Komi Republic, Russia. These events are the “Zumyd Osh” (Strong Bear) Upper Vychegda wrestling tournament and the “Va Berd” (Water Surface) Singing Festival. These cultural and social events were organized by local activists, who publicized the events, secured the support by the Ministry of National Policy of the Komi Republic, and raised the status of what were originally local events to the republican level. Currently, the tournament and festival creatively merge community initiative and administrative resources, sport and music, and old and new traditions as well as modern (globalized) and ethnic forms of spending free time.
