- Abstract
While Sufism, like the other Islamic sciences, assigns primacy to belief in God's Unity, or tawhid, it demands its Sufi adherents to perceive it experientially through the conscience, beyond a mere rational cognition. In this approach to tawhid pioneered by Bayezid al-Bistami, the Sufis have sought to confirm and test rational knowledge with experiential knowledge. A belief in tawhid buttressed with worship and contemplation leads the servant, via a development of the heart and spirit, to shed their own selfhood and the created realm, to the state of being 'lost in God'. Everything has now become lost in the One, and all other than Him, buried in nihility. In addition to his rational acceptance and belief in the tawhid doctrine, Bayezid al-Bistami is one of the first to have perceived it experientially.
