- Abstract
The "Miracle de l'esbarzer" of well of Pare Pere tells how this Franciscan made the thorns disappear from a bush that grew around the well of Jesús Pobre (Xàbia, Alicante, Spain) where he went to get water and in which he pricked himself. This unarmed bramble has been known and appreciated since then in this locality, as well as in neighboring towns, which they cultivate as an ornamental. The Pare Pere's bramble belongs to a unarmed (spineless) form of Rubus ulmifolius. This plant was already known and was named before R. ulmifolius himself was published, which causes a nomenclatural instability whose problem must be addressed. The origin, the taxonomic identification as well as the relationship it has with other species of the genus of brambles or blackberries (Rubus subg. Rubus) is addressed in this study.
