- Abstract
This new book inevitably invites comparisons with Ontogeny and Phylogeny by Stephen Jay Gould, published two decades ago. It is, after all, one long argument for the importance of heterochrony in evolution, written for a general audience by an invertebrate palaeontologist. Gratifyingly, however, there is little overlap in either content or style. Gould's book began with the statement 'I am aware that I treat a subject currently unpopular'. That soon changed, due in no small part to his efforts. The renewed interest in heterochrony led to a plethora of empirical studies in the past 20 years, from workers in a variety of disciplines working on disparate organisms. Shapes of Time draws together this body of work in an enlightening, provocative and highly readable volume. Thus, the two books complement rather than duplicate each other.
