INTERGENERATIONAL TRANSMISSION OF CULTURAL FAMILY PATTERNS.

- Abstract
The intergenerational transmission of cultural family patterns is as likely to occur as the intergenerational transmission of patterns of conflict, yet traditionally family therapists have not been directed to assess its impact on the client or family in a systematic way. This paper focuses on the area of accessing cultural background information when conducting assessments and providing treatment. The case is made that taking a cultural history helps the therapist not only gain access to the client's cultural context, but enables clients to clarify their own view of themselves, their behavior, and their interpersonal relationships. A case example is presented to illustrate the value of accessing cultural information.
