- Abstract
The lifetime of synthetic yarns subjected to constant load is generally described by an empirical model expressing the logarithm of 'time-to-failure' as a linear decreasing function of the applied load or, alternatively, by means of a power-law equation. The failure of aramid yarns is systematically explored here and both models are successfully used to fit the experimental data. The models are extended to describe yarn failure on filament level. Application of these models to the experimental data shows that, independent of a visco-elastic response, failure can be interpreted in terms of an almost constant rate damage accumulation prior to an avalanche of breaking filaments (yarn failure).
