- Authors
HAZAREESINGH, SUDHIR
- Abstract
The article presents information on the relationship between French republicanism and how the past has been commemorated in France since the beginning of the French Third Republic in 1840. The author explores how the commemoration of the past by France's State institutions has frequently caused public controversy. The author notes that since the 1870s France has attempted to establish historical and ideological values that they believe should be collectively celebrated by the country. The author explores how this debate had continued in modern France and discusses the political and social issues that accompany it.
