- Abstract
The article describes a study aimed at determining the effectiveness of escitalopram and problem-solving therapy in preventing depression in acute-stroke patients. A total of 176 patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups--a placebo group, a group receiving escitalopram, and a group subject to problem-solving therapy. Treatment lasted for twelve months. Results indicated that both escitalopram and problem-solving therapy substantially reduced the incidence of depression relative to those who received a placebo.
