- Abstract
In this paper Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled to Secondary X-ray Emission techniques, was applied to study stucco supports and pigments from huge four Mayan masks located at the five floor building and the 414 structure into the pre-Hispanic site of Edzná, Campeche, México. Results indicate that in spite of their chronologic differences, they were fabricated by using calcareous materials like limestone and sascab following similar construction techniques. The analysis of pigments indicated the systematic presence of Fe in ochre, red and yellow colors. Black color was characterized by high proportion of vegetal carbon. By the other hand, the blue and green colors couldn't be associated to any mineral dye sources.
