- Title
The Lego-ization of polyketide biosynthesis.
- Authors

- Abstract
The article focuses on modular method for assembling polyketide synthases (PKSs), which accelerates the generation of new polyketides. PKSs are organized as molecular assembly lines for the synthesis of polyketides, compounds with antibacterial, antiparasitic, immunosuppressant and anticancer activities, typically in two-carbon building blocks. Numerous Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, dinoflagellates and microbial symbionts from macroorganisms such as lichens, sponges, ascidians and soft corals contain a wealth of PKS metabolic variability. Heterologous modules have been added to an existing PKS, creating a hybrid that generates the predicted larger macrocycles.
